In May, we present ‘Mirroring’ curated by Seda Yıldırım, Werkplaats Typografie. The series features 14 one-minute videos exploring the fascinating phenomenon of mirroring, submitted from Argentina, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Indonesia, the Netherlands, Russia, and the United Kingdom.
We mirror. “Not to convey the pure essence of the thing. It sinks the thing into the life of the storyteller in order to bring it out of them again. Thus traces of the storyteller cling to the story the way the fingerprints of the potter cling to the clay vessel.” said Walter Benjamin. Just like that, in this curation, each video becomes a surface, reflecting traces of the storyteller. Acts like a mirror that’s aware of the silence of things you speak so as to see and to be seen.
Mirroring here is not merely a reflection; it is an active engagement, a mutual recognition where experiences and stories intertwine. This interaction bridges the gaps between us. The mirror, in this context, is far from passive; it speaks, it distorts, it transforms. And gazing at this mirror is not for the purpose of seeing what is visible; that is to say, if what I see is limited by the width of this mirror, I might. This beckons us to recognize our limits and the profound necessity of understanding in the human experience, reminding us that in seeing each other, we too are seen.
